The Cyber Mentor
They say, if you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there. In the world of cyber, there are many roads. These roads present themselves in the form of prospective employers, possible degrees, and certifications to study for, and potential careers to apply for. Going down the wrong path can cost you time and money.
Grant has been in IT for over 14 years, and in security for more than 8 years. He has never held the same security role for longer than 2.5 years, and that is not by chance. There is a formula, a set of things we need to know and understand to accelerate our development in the cyber industry. It is not a magic formula, but rather a blueprint of the right things, in the right sequence.
The lessons you will learn from Grant cannot be learnt at any university. These are lessons from the trenches, that include anything from what to look out for in an employment contract, to what to study, or how to negotiate a fair salary.
You can either spend the next 10 years figuring it out, bumping your head along the way, potentially wasting money and time as you make these avoidable mistakes, or you can invest in yourself and partner with someone who has already figured it out, and learn from the mistakes and successes of others.
How does it work?
It will consist of three 1 hour long 1 on 1 sessions. These can be via Zoom, Teams, or in-person if you are based in Cape Town. The sessions will broadly follow the following structure:
Session 1
Understanding where you are from an experience, qualification, and certification perspective. We will dig into your motivation for wanting to be in cyber, and your expectations of the role. If the perception is wrong, and the expectations is unreasonable, you will set yourself up for failure.
Session 2
In this sessions, we will delve into ideal and possible future roles. The patch to the ideal job is not a straight one, nor are there industry standard career paths. We will craft a transition and development plan, based on where you are currently and where you wish to be.
Session 3
We will review the development plan and transition plan, along with your resume and milestone plan.
What do you get at the end?
